What Is Rod Ratio?
Rod ratio is the connecting rod's center-to-center length divided by the crankshaft stroke. It describes the geometry of the piston's motion and has a meaningful effect on engine character, bearing loads, and where the engine makes its best power.
How Rod Ratio Affects Performance
A higher rod ratio (longer rod for a given stroke) means the piston spends more time near top dead center (TDC), giving the air-fuel mixture more time to burn at peak pressure. It also reduces the maximum rod angle, which lowers side loading on the piston skirt and cylinder wall.
A lower rod ratio (shorter rod) increases piston acceleration and side loading, but the faster piston motion away from TDC can create a stronger vacuum effect on the intake stroke, potentially improving midrange cylinder filling.
The Trade-offs
- Longer rod (higher ratio): Less side loading, more dwell at TDC, lower piston acceleration, better ring seal, favors high-RPM power. May require a shorter piston (less skirt area) or a taller deck height.

Rod Angle and Side Loading
The maximum rod angle occurs at 90° after top dead center. At this point, the connecting rod exerts the most lateral force on the piston, pushing it against the cylinder wall (thrust side). A higher rod ratio reduces this maximum angle, reducing cylinder wear and friction.
Practical Considerations
- Rod ratio alone doesn't make or break an engine — cam timing, port flow, and compression ratio matter more.
- Changing rod length requires careful piston selection to maintain the correct deck height and compression ratio.
- Most factory engines fall between 1.55:1 and 1.70:1 as a cost-effective compromise. Race builds often target 1.75:1 or higher.
